Ida Elizabeth Daniel

1863-1927

Ida Elizabeth Daniel was my maternal great-grandmother.  She was born in Adams Station, TN, on March 7, 1863, during the Civil War.

The Hebrew meaning of the surname Daniel is "God is my Judge."

Adams Station was along the Tennessee and Kentucky border and this is a map drawn during the 1800s.  

My maternal line is as follows:

In the 1870 US Census, Ida Elizabeth was seven years old and lived with her father, Robert Burton Daniel, and mother, Elizabeth Ann Tolleson Daniel, on their family farm, along with her younger brother Robert, Jr. The farm was mostly tobacco. 

Ida Elizabeth Daniel worked as a teacher which is noted in the 1880 US Census below.

On December 4, 1882, she married David Henry, also from Robertson County, TN. 

The Henrys were Baptists and the Daniels were Methodists. 

Together, David and Ida had six children:

Jesse Daniel Henry 1889-1955

Robert Earle Henry 1890-1897

David Leroy Henry 1894-1896

When Ida Elizabeth Henry, the youngest (my grandmother) was less than a year old, her father, David Henry, died suddenly.  Her mother, Ida Elizabeth Daniel Henry, was now left with six children without a father.  Sadly, two of her children, Robert Earle and David Leroy, passed away as young children.  

On the 1900 US Census, Ida Henry was now head of the household and raising four children ranging in age from three to sixteen years old on the family farm.

In 1910, Ida married Dr. Henry Guller in Robertson County, TN.  Dr. Guller was a citrus fruit grove owner, a chiropractic doctor, and an ordained Methodist minister. Dr. Guller was born in New York City and both of his parents were born in Germany.  At the time of their marriage, he worked full time with his citrus business in Florida.

I loved this advertisement I found in an out of state newspaper, the Arizona Republican, submitted by Mrs. H. Guller, Oak Hill, for the sale of sour orange seeds. 

My Aunt Marie Simmons Goodrich wrote a book about her mother entitled "Mama's Family- Ida Elizabeth Henry Simmons" in 2006 and shared it with us as a surprise at Christmas 2006.  Inside, is the following excerpt with a collection of memories about her grandmother, Ida Elizabeth Daniel Henry Guller:

Sharon Huston Wolfe, another great-granddaughter of Great-grandma Guller, who passed away in 2013, from MO, shared this memory in a letter to "Marie and 'Lil Ida" several years back...

"I am still fascinated with the story mother told about how Grandmother Guller could not back the car so had a garage built with no front or back so that all she had to do before driving was to go straight out.  She said that the single file road out of the orange groves was rough with one set of muddy ruts... heaven forbid if you would meet another car but then I guess there weren't many cars."

Local New Smyrna News published the following two articles in their local paper in 1924 and 1925.  

Even though my mom was born a few years after Grandma Guller died, I have always thought she had many of her talented characteristics and traits. She also, along with her mother, Ida, was her namesake.  

Ida H. Guller passed away on December 13, 1927 in Oak Hill, FL, at the family home.  After her death, the home burned to the ground on a Sunday afternoon when the local minister was having a meal with her son, Jesse, and his wife, Claire Henry, and son Dan. No one knew how the fire started.

Ida Elizabeth Daniel Henry Guller was buried in the Edgewater Cemetery, Volusia County, FL.
